C.V. SUGGESTIONS (continued)

Special Training

  • You can list such things as Cardiac Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation under certification, or you can list them in a separate section.

Areas of Interest

  • If you have particular interest or ability in an area of your specialty, say so.

Research

  • Be specific, but brief.

Presentations

  • List anything really special. Don’t include Grand Rounds topics.

Hobbies or Personal Interests

  • Include personal interests only if they are actually interesting. (Most people cook, read books and go to movies.)

References

  • List references on a separate page. Include titles, addresses and phone numbers. This page might not be sent unless you and the prospective employer “get serious” about each other. “References available upon request” is a superfluous statement. Everyone knows you have references; if you don’t, you’ll never he hired.

Cover Letter

  • You might choose to write a cover letter offering additional information about yourself, your aims, your family. This letter may be included when your C.V. is sent to a prospective employer, or it may serve as the basis for an introductory statement written your recruiter. It will help your recruiter to know you better and to introduce you to a prospective employer with more enthusiasm and specificity.

Caution

  • Never, ever tell a recruiter, “Send my C.V. anywhere you think appropriate.” You should know where your C.V. has been sent, the date it was sent, and which recruiter sent it. I suggest you keep a log in a small notebook.

Proofread

  • Funniest thing I have seen on a C.V.: the listing of a “Ground Rounds” presentation. (Yes, really.)
