C.V. SUGGESTIONS (continued)

Employment

  • For employment, training and education, use reverse chronology; i.e. start with your present position.
  • List employer's name, or name of practice, or hospital affiliation. Include dates. If you are in an academic position, list your responsibilities.
  • Do not include non-medical jobs, unless they explain a break in dates. Employers look for gaps in the time sequence. Any "missing" years, such a a gap between medical school and residency might be explained be an employment entry. The gap can also be explained in a cover letter (Were you traveling, caring for a family?)

Education and Training

  • Start with training. Again, reverse chronology. If you did a fellowship, list type, name of institution, location and dates. Next is residency - department, institution, location, dates. If you did an internship, list that in the same way. Do not list your training under "Employment" (even though you were paid).
  • Next comes your medical school and any other graduate education. Include institution, location, years, and degree(s) earned.
  • Undergraduate follows the same pattern. You can list your major if you wish.
  • High school is optional. If you are an immigrant or a second-generation U.S. citizen with a traditional or ethnic name, you may want to include high school information to convey longevity in this country.

Honors and Awards

  • It is sometimes difficult to figure out where to list your accolades. They don't really belong under "Education and Training." I think, especially if you have several, that they deserve a separate section. You may want to put them in sub-sections according to time sequence: current, residency, medical school, undergraduate.

Licensure

  • List the states in which you hold a license. If you have inactive licensure in other states, so indicate. You do not need to include license numbers.

Certification

  • If you are Board Certified, give the year of your certification.
  • If you are scheduled for oral Boards, give the date you will be taking the exam.
  • Don't bother saying you have passed various steps of the USMLE. You wouldn't be sending out a C.V. if you had not.
